James MacParland's clandestine operation to dismantle Pennsylvania's Molly Maguire coal miners inspired the novel. Fred Porlock, Professor Moriarty's alias, sends Holmes a cipher. Porlock reconsiders and writes Holmes, fearing Moriarty's wrath.

Holmes and Watson get involved in espionage, the recovery of purloined plans for building a submarine, bringing down a deposed dictator, unraveling a crime of passion, tracking down a foreign crime syndicate, outwitting a poisoner, investigating an heiress's disappearance, and solving a devilish case of murder and madness.
In His Last Bow, Holmes is drawn from his retirement to reunite with the ever-faithful Dr. Watson for their final challenge, unmasking a German spy and protecting British secrets during World War I.
